Teaching experience
Monica has more than 20 years of experience as a teacher working with children, teenagers and adults and has taught in institution such as the London College of Music, City Lit, Eafit University, Diego Echavarria Institute among others. In private teaching she has been working with students of all ages and interests. Her students often perform successfully at ABRSM, Trinity and Rockschool examinations, gain places at selective performing arts schools (Spirit, Royal Academy of Music - Musical Theatre Youth Programme) and have also been awarded scholarships at independent schools (Channing School, South Hampstead High School and Immanuel College). Students have also successfully obtained roles in leading West End shows.
Performing experience
Monica has sung for opera companies, choruses, vocal ensembles and has been a member of contemporary classical groups and Latin and Hispanic folk groups. She completed a Master Degree in Contemporary Vocal Repertoire at Roehampton University. A scholarship was awarded for her to attend the 2005 Dartington International Summer School where she performed the Ladino solo in Noham Sheriff’s Sephardic Passion with the Summer School Orchestra and Chorus conducted by Malcolm Singer. Monica participated in the launch of the publication The Sephardic Songbook in an event organized by the Jewish Music Institute (JMI) at Central Synagogue, London. Together with pianist Craig White, Monica created TangoDuo, an ensemble dedicated to the promotion and performance of tango songs and new pieces in the style of tango music.
Monica has performed in several venues and festivals included the Spitz, Cargo, Glastonbury 2003, Queen Elizabeth Hall, The Hub at Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, Barbican, London Coliseum, National Theatre, Rosemary Branch Theatre, SOAS, Handel House Museum and British Library.
In her native Colombia, Monica has been involved in several performance projects to include workshops for amateurs, singing students and professional singers during the celebration of John Cage's centenary in 2012.
Monica has worked for the Jewish Music Institute JMI giving Sephardic Songs workshops at the Jewish Song School and at KlezFest since 2006. Monica is also involved in several collaboration projects involving tango and contemporary music, contemporary and flamenco dance and video.
